Starting this week, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is shaking up its online lobbies. Season 5 introduces an updated matchmaking system designed to feel more in line with how the series used to operate, drawing direct inspiration from older entries in the franchise.

Why Activision Updated Matchmaking
According to the official Call of Duty accounts, the team spent the past year gathering player data and community feedback regarding multiplayer matchmaking. The recent PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 releases of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 further fueled community discussion around how the older games felt to play.
"We're also excited to see all the recent love for Black Ops and Black Ops II, which reinforced that there are many elements of those experiences that players appreciate," Activision stated regarding the update.
Where the New System Applies
The classic-inspired matchmaking rolls out specifically for Black Ops Classic, Quick Play, and Party Games within Black Ops 7. At the same time, Activision confirmed that modern Open playlists will continue to remain available for players who prefer them. Looking ahead, Open playlist options will also be included in the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 Beta.
