Levy “GothamChess” Rozman has officially joined the esports organization BASILISK, taking on the role of Head of Chess. This marks the first time the YouTube creator, who currently has over 8 million subscribers, has partnered with an esports organization.
Strategic Goals and Competitive Direction
Unlike traditional content creator deals, Rozman’s position at BASILISK grants him authority over the organization's chess-related competitive direction and content strategy. Rozman stated that he chose to partner with BASILISK because the organization aligns with his vision of bringing “nerdy” games and activities to a mainstream audience.
A primary motivation for this move is to address structural issues in competitive chess. Rozman pointed to the current reliance on invitational-only tournaments, which often exclude talented players from smaller regions. He intends to use the BASILISK platform to foster more open or inclusive qualification paths, similar to the structures used in other esports disciplines.
Future Initiatives and STEM Education
Beyond competitive play, Rozman is exploring ways to integrate chess into broader educational efforts. He highlighted an interest in STEM-focused partnerships, citing his previous experience running school-based chess programs. While no formal non-profit or educational program has been announced, Rozman indicated that such initiatives are currently under consideration to encourage younger players to engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The Esports Ecosystem
Rozman’s move into the esports space follows the recent success of chess at events like the Esports World Cup. He noted that these events have provided a vital proving ground for emerging talent, citing player Denis Lazavik’s recent performance as evidence that esports-style events provide necessary opportunities for high-level competition that traditional circuits often lack.
While specific project details remain under wraps, Rozman expressed intent to scale up future events, aiming for viewership numbers reaching the millions.
