Xbox is introducing a new Disc to Digital feature that enables players to claim digital entitlements for supported physical games they already own. Designed to help players carry existing Xbox libraries across multiple hardware generations, the feature extends access to devices like PCs, handhelds, and cloud-supported devices.
Testing for the feature begins for Xbox Insiders on August 31 ahead of a wider rollout. Microsoft states that the update forms part of broader game preservation efforts as the Xbox ecosystem expands beyond traditional consoles.
Compatibility and Requirements
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games will support the system. To claim a digital entitlement, players must insert a supported physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game.
Once claimed, the entitlement unlocks digital features associated with that title, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. Thousands of games will support Disc to Digital at the start of testing, though not every physical title is eligible immediately. Additional games are planned to be added over time.
Crucially, claiming the digital version does not disable or convert the original physical copy. Microsoft confirmed that physical discs will continue to function normally after the digital entitlement is claimed.

The introduction of Disc to Digital coincides with celebrations for Xbox's 25th anniversary. Alongside the feature rollout, Microsoft revealed the limited-edition Xbox Series X25 console and a collection of anniversary accessories featuring translucent designs inspired by the original Xbox hardware.
