After nearly two years of silence, NEKCOM’s Showa American Story reappeared during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. The new trailer confirms the title remains on track for a 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and PC, following a previous delay from its original 2025 target.
Gameplay and World Updates
The latest look at the game showcases protagonist Chigusa Choko traversing an alternate version of the United States, where an unending Japanese economic boom led to the acquisition of the country. Choko, a stuntwoman who returns from the dead, is now joined by new characters including Michael Hero, Bubba, and Mutsuki Akitora.
Combat remains a core focus, with the trailer highlighting a variety of offensive options:
- Weaponry: Players can utilize swords, firearms, a drill arm, and improvised weapons, such as an American flag.
- Mechanics: The combat system features counters, executions, and a mix-and-match weapon approach that allows for different loadouts per encounter.
- RPG Elements: Choko’s abilities and stats can be improved through training and specific minigames.
- Mini-games: The world includes playable 80s-style arcade games, specifically SpaceBunny and ShowaRun.
The game’s narrative and environment will also shift based on player agency. According to NEKCOM, dialogue choices and the relationships Choko builds with other survivors will have tangible effects on the world state as she searches for her missing sister across reworked American cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Austin.
