Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), is using Gamescom 2026 in Cologne to scout for new cybersecurity talent. The agency is actively seeking gamers who demonstrate aptitude for hacking and digital operations to join its ranks as special agents.

The recruitment initiative aligns with broader administrative shifts in Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s cabinet recently approved reforms that grant the BND expanded powers, including a new “hack back” provision. This allows the agency to take retaliatory measures against foreign cyberattacks, such as targeting hostile intelligence databases or weapons production networks.
BND spokesperson Julia Linner stated that the agency identifies a significant overlap between the skills required for intelligence work and those honed by gamers. According to the BND, the ability to step into different roles, navigate complex challenges, and persistently attempt tasks until success is achieved makes the gaming community a primary target for recruitment.
At the BND booth, visitors can play BND Legends. The game tasks players with stopping a cyberattack within the fictional rogue state of "Bethulan." During gameplay, participants must avoid surveillance drones, manage security codes, and coordinate with virtual teammates to complete the mission. Agents will be present at the booth to observe players and identify potential candidates for advanced cyber roles.
