Development is officially in full-scale production, marking the start of a brand-new saga for the franchise. CD Projekt RED initially announced the project in March 2022 under the internal codename Project Polaris, alongside a transition from the proprietary REDengine to Unreal Engine 5.

Ciri was confirmed as the lead character during the game's official reveal at The Game Awards 2024, which featured a cinematic trailer establishing her role as a professional monster slayer. In June 2025, CD Projekt RED and Epic Games showcased Unreal Engine 5 technologies using The Witcher 4 as a backdrop, featuring the explorable region of Kovir running at 60 FPS on a base PlayStation 5.

Gamescom 2026 Presence

While The Witcher 4 itself will not be shown at gamescom 2026, CD Projekt RED is focusing its convention presence on the newly announced expansion, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past.
