Unconfirmed gameplay and map footage from Grand Theft Auto VI circulating online has been dismissed by former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij as a "nothing burger" that will not deter fans from playing the title when it arrives.
The latest wave of leaks began on August 18 when user Cyberleek started uploading gameplay videos featuring build material with 2025 radio tracks. According to the uploader, the clips were published in protest of digital pre-orders, single-player DLC practices, and digital game ownership rights. Take-Two has since issued subpoenas to Microsoft and Discord to identify the source, while Rockstar has moved to strike down the clips.
Vermeij addressed the situation on social media, arguing that the leaks serve as a minor distraction ahead of scheduled promotional reveals and will have negligible impact on consumer interest. He noted that the vast majority of future players do not spend time tracking down internet snippets and want to avoid spoilers.
While acknowledging that the development team is likely frustrated, Vermeij contrasted the current situation with the severe disruption caused by the Hot Coffee controversy during the era of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He emphasized that the leaks amount to a tiny blip and that the final product will remain unaffected for players.
