To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic first-person shooter, Id Software and MachineGames have released Dawn of the Machine, a free expansion for the 2021 enhanced version of Quake. The content adds 19 new maps to the campaign, a fresh soundtrack, and a dedicated deathmatch map.
New Content and Gameplay Features
The expansion focuses on a narrative involving the character Ranger, who is trapped in a dimension of "endless illusion" and must track down the titular Nightmare Machine. Players will encounter modified versions of familiar enemies, including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler, which are designed to challenge players with explosive traps and overwhelming fire.
The update also introduces two new weapons to the arsenal:
- Super Axe: Capable of firing bolts of lightning.
- Laser Cannon: Features projectiles that ricochet off surfaces.
Availability and Technical Notes
As of August 2026, Dawn of the Machine is live for owners of the 2021 Quake enhanced edition on Steam and the Microsoft Store/Game Pass. Id Software has noted that the update is not yet available on the GOG or Epic Games Store versions. Users on those platforms may encounter connection errors if they attempt to join sessions hosted by players on other platforms.
In addition to the new levels, the update includes a vault of historical development art and assets, a new cheat menu, and updated localization tools for the modding community.
