Halo: Campaign Evolved has launched without PvP multiplayer, an omission that has drawn criticism from fans and original franchise creators alike. While the remake supports co-op play, there is currently no path for competitive matches, and Halo Studios has confirmed no plans to implement the feature.

Lack of PvP Criticized

The absence of competitive multiplayer has been identified as a significant drawback for the title. Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the original Halo and art director for Combat Evolved, publicly labeled the exclusion of split-screen PvP a "misstep" resulting from "lack of oversight and poor planning."

Lehto also shared critiques regarding the game's visual direction. He noted that the Forerunner environments—which he believes should appear ancient and worn—look overly polished. "While Forerunner tech was metal (not stone) it was also ancient, vast, alive, and a tomb to the horrors that lurked within," Lehto stated on August 13, 2026. "Yet the game shows it as shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago."

Market Impact and Future Outlook

Industry analysis suggests that the lack of competitive modes is impacting the game's market performance. Reports indicate that the remake is currently trailing behind the sales of recently released Call of Duty ports on PlayStation 5.

While some players have expressed interest in seeing competitive modes added via future updates, the game's title specifically highlights its focus on the campaign experience. Consequently, the addition of PvP appears unlikely, though Lehto noted it would be "awesome" if the studio were to change course.
