Chris Hays, a 16-year veteran and lead services programmer at Doom developer id Software, has publicly criticized Xbox management following the recent wave of layoffs across the gaming division. Hays argues that the corporate structure imposed by the parent company is incompatible with the creative realities of game production.
Concerns Over Corporate Management
In an interview with the Auf ein Bier YouTube channel, Hays stated that Xbox leadership lacks a fundamental understanding of the gaming industry. He specifically pointed to the tension between fiscal quarterly goals and the multi-year development cycles required to create high-quality, artistic software.
"They fundamentally don't understand art. They don't understand games. They don't understand that business model," Hays said. "How can we get this financial quarter or year to look good? Those don't align with the same things that make a successful game."
Impact on Studio Capacity
The critique arrives amid ongoing questions regarding id Software's operational capacity following broader workforce reductions at Xbox, which involved 1,600 initial cuts and an additional 1,600 pending job losses. While some reports suggested the studio had lost half of its total staff, those figures have been contested.
Hugo Martin, director of Doom: The Dark Ages, has publicly stated that the studio's current headcount is consistent with the size of the team during the development of Doom (2016) and confirmed that the engine team remains active.
Despite these assurances, Hays expressed concern regarding the loss of institutional knowledge and support staff. He noted that the departure of entire departments creates uncertainty about how the remaining team will maintain the scope of previous projects without necessary infrastructure, skybox, and engine personnel.
