Reddit has paused all upcoming in-person moderator events following security concerns sparked by an unapproved attendee attempting to access a meetup at the company's San Francisco headquarters.
Quick Facts
- Event Status: All upcoming in-person Mod Events are canceled while security and attendee vetting processes are overhauled.
- Immediate Impact: Previously announced meetups in Los Angeles and Amsterdam have been canceled.
- Alternative: Virtual Mod Events will continue during the pause.
Security Overhaul After HQ Incident
The policy change arrived following an incident involving former r/LivestreamFail moderator Bryan Wade, known online as Stale2000. Wade was placed on a waitlist for the San Francisco meetup before arranging to attend as another moderator's plus-one. Reddit security eventually removed him from the venue and warned that police would be called if he refused.
In an August 20 announcement made on Reddit, the company stated that venue details for the San Francisco gathering had been shared with moderators who were not approved to attend. While Reddit did not explicitly name Wade in its update, the description matched the security breach at the San Francisco office.
What Changes for Moderators Moving Forward
Internal teams raised valid security concerns following the breach, prompting the company to pause real-world gatherings indefinitely. Before any future in-person events return, Reddit plans to increase venue security, restrict how event details are distributed, and strengthen vetting procedures so only approved participants can access event spaces.
Administrators clarified that while all moderators remain eligible to apply for future meetups, attendees must pass an internal approval process and unapproved individuals will not receive location details. In the interim, Reddit will place a heavier focus on virtual online gatherings.
