Dave Bautista is officially set to play Kratos in Amazon’s live-action God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst after an injury required the production to recast its lead role. Variety confirmed Bautista's casting roughly two weeks after initial reports placed the former WWE wrestler and Guardians of the Galaxy actor in negotiations for the part.

Quick Facts

  • New Kratos Actor: Dave Bautista
  • Previous Cast Member: Ryan Hurst (withdrew due to injury)
  • Platform & Network: Amazon Prime Video
  • Production Status: Filming in Vancouver restarting in the coming weeks with two seasons ordered back-to-back

Why Ryan Hurst Left the Role

Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set in June and required surgery. Recovery would have prevented him from returning to production until 2027. Rather than suspend filming for that length of time, Amazon and Sony decided to recast Kratos. Every scene previously filmed with Hurst now needs to be reshot from scratch.

Filming originally began in Vancouver in February before the on-set injury halted production. With Bautista now officially stepping into the lead role, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. Amazon has ordered two seasons to be filmed back-to-back.

Cast and Story Details

Amazon's adaptation follows the Norse storyline that began with Santa Monica Studio’s 2018 game, skipping the Greek pantheon era. The narrative tracks Kratos and his 10-year-old son Atreus traveling to spread the ashes of Faye.

The confirmed cast features Callum Vinson as Atreus alongside Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Alastair Duncan reprises his video game role as Mimir, while Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka portray the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri.

Additionally, casting calls discovered by MP1st indicate Amazon is looking to recast older versions of Atreus and Thrud for the second season. No official release date has been announced for the series yet.
