Activision's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta has sparked heavy community pushback ahead of its launch, with players zeroing in on plans for skill-based matchmaking and disbanding lobbies.

- Core Point of Testing: Comparing an updated matchmaking system against an Open Matchmaking option
Matchmaking System Under Scrutiny
Activision confirmed that the MW4 beta will test an updated matchmaking system alongside an Open Matchmaking option to gather data before the game's October release. According to the developer, the updated system weighs player skill alongside connection quality, location, time of day, playlist, party composition, platform, cross-play settings, and total player population.
To defend the system, Activision pointed to data from Black Ops 7 covering launch through Season 4. The publisher claimed that fully open matchmaking led to an 80% increase in quit rates by 32.7%, alongside 14.4% fewer kills per minute, a 5.3% lower win rate, and 59.2% more "Not Fun" match ratings.
The community has strongly questioned those figures. Prominent community figures argued that late-lifecycle data from Black Ops 7—a title they claim alienated casual players due to its movement mechanics—should not dictate matchmaking design for Modern Warfare 4. International players also noted that regional matchmaking constraints, such as high ping in countries like Brazil without visible ping indicators, make the current setup difficult to navigate.
Disbanding Lobbies Draw Community Frustration
Beyond skill-based matchmaking, the confirmation that lobbies will continue to disband after each match has drawn direct criticism. Activision stated that roughly 50% of players leave after a single match anyway, and almost none of the original lobby remains by game three. The developer argues that creating fresh lobbies gets players into new matches faster than backfilling persistent groups.
Content creators and players pushed back on the logic, asserting that forcing lobby disbands removes player choice and eliminates the social and competitive benefits of persistent lobbies.
Players can test both matchmaking options firsthand during the early access beta from August 21 to 25 and the open beta from August 28 to September 1, 2026, ahead of the full game release on October 23.
