Supermassive Games, the developer behind The Dark Pictures Anthology and Until Dawn, has announced plans to lay off up to 75 employees. The studio confirmed it has entered a redundancy consultation process, describing the move as a measure to “ensure the sustainability of the company.”
A History of Workforce Reductions
This development marks the third instance of workforce reduction for the British studio in recent years. Previous layoffs occurred in February 2024, affecting 90 employees, followed by an additional 36 job losses in July 2025. That 2025 reduction was directly linked to a delay in the development of Directive 8020.
Impact on Recent Titles
Since the beginning of these redundancy cycles, the studio has released The Casting of Frank Stone, Little Nightmares 3, and most recently, Directive 8020. According to reports, these titles have not met critical or commercial expectations. Directive 8020, which was intended to launch the second season of The Dark Pictures Anthology, currently holds a 72 average on Metacritic, with reviews noting that the experience was underwhelming.
