A pair of brothers has been sentenced following a series of high-value burglaries targeting stores specializing in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Keith Johnson, 33, and Shane Johnson, 37, were caught by Cheshire police after a spree that saw them steal £62,000 worth of stock from specialized retailers.

The Crime Spree

The brothers targeted Celestial Collectables in Warrington, smashing through the shop door to gain entry. Once inside, they ransacked the premises, causing over £3,000 in damage to the building before fleeing the scene in a white Ford transit van with the stolen merchandise.

The duo’s criminal enterprise extended beyond Warrington, with further stock stolen from stores in Stockton Heath, Warwickshire, and The Graded Gallery in Rugby. The burglary at The Graded Gallery proved particularly destructive, with over £9,000 in damages inflicted on the store alongside the theft of their inventory.

Sentencing and Police Investigation

Police eventually tracked the brothers to their home address by tracing the movements of the van used during the burglaries. A search of the property led to the recovery of the stolen cards.

Keith Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary with intent to steal at a hearing earlier this month and has been sentenced to 29 months in prison. His brother, Shane Johnson, admitted to the same offenses and is scheduled for sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court on July 31.

"The overwhelming evidence collected through our extensive enquiries put them at both crime scenes giving them no choice but to plead guilty," said DC Hannah Smith. "The brothers will now have to pay the price for their part in their criminal Pokémon enterprise."

A Volatile Market

While this case of theft is extreme, it highlights the ongoing tension within the Pokémon TCG hobby. Manufactured scarcity—often attributed to The Pokémon Company printing less stock than the market demands—has created a climate where high-value cards remain a prime target for criminal activity and aggressive scalping.

Though supply levels began to stabilize following the Prismatic Evolutions release and the current influx of Destined Rivals stock, the community remains wary. With the 30th Anniversary expansion on the horizon, collectors and shop owners are bracing for potential further instability in the market. Despite these recurring issues, the hobby continues to be supported by a community that frequently rallies to help businesses impacted by such events.
