Garfield has taken on plenty of roles in his gaming history, from trivia contestant to kart racer. But in 2026, the world’s most famous house cat is returning to his roots with a twist. Garfield: Escape from Monday, developed by OSome Studio, puts the titular slacker into a 3D platformer that trades his usual couch-potato lifestyle for a surreal dreamscape filled with rogue vegetables and high-stakes food challenges.
A Nightmare Built on Healthy Lasagna
The premise is classic Garfield: after consuming a vegetable-filled lasagna prepared by his owner Jon—a recipe courtesy of the villainous TV host Chef Monday—Garfield slips into a food-induced nightmare. To wake up, he must navigate a bizarre dream world that mashes up food styles and television tropes, all while dealing with Chef Monday’s taunts and an army of food-themed monsters.
While Garfield is known for his laziness, the game shifts his movement to match the demands of a 3D platformer. You can expect to leap, dash, and explore stages in a style reminiscent of 90s classics like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. The game leans heavily into the collectathon formula, tasking players with grabbing food and hidden portions of lasagna to earn credit and progress through the dream-worlds.
Costumes and Combat
The core of the experience comes down to unique power-ups. Much like the Super Mario series, Garfield earns specific costumes that grant him abilities suited to the environment:
- Turkey Suit: Provides extra airtime for clearing long gaps in the farm world.
- Surfer Costume: Allows Garfield to grind rails, ride waterfalls, and dash across water in the beach-themed levels.
- Cowboy Suit: Grants a lasso for taming wild vegetables and grappling to high surfaces in the Western-themed stages.
Combat remains light, focusing on simple jump and kick attacks to bypass foes. Interestingly, the developers have included a nod to the character's personality; you can choose to have Garfield move at a snail's pace, crawling through levels just as the grumpy cat would in real life.
Home Sweet Home
When you aren't busy platforming, the game offers a persistent hub in the form of a dream version of the Arbuckle residence. As you collect items during missions, you unlock furniture and decorations, allowing you to customize the house as a hangout spot between stages. It is a nice touch that adds a layer of progression beyond just reaching the end of a level.
While Garfield: Escape from Monday doesn't try to reinvent the platformer genre, it succeeds by focusing on solid fundamentals and self-aware humor. Garfield frequently pokes fun at video game clichés, including his own past experiences with kart racing, and even features a challenging mini-game segment inspired by Flappy Bird. It is a lighthearted, familiar experience that serves as a solid addition to the cat's library—as long as you aren't expecting a healthy vegetable lasagna on your plate.
