Game Freak has released a video interview featuring director Shigeru Ohmori, offering a look at the early development and prototype footage for Pokémon Pokopia on the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Ohmori, work on the title began shortly after wrapping up Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Early Development and Core Concepts
The initial prototype phase began with a tiny team of just three people—Ohmori and two programmers—before expanding to five. Even at this early stage, the core mechanic of planting grass to spawn various types of Pokémon was already implemented. The team also locked in the decision to use Ditto as the protagonist early in development.
Ohmori noted that considerable testing went into scaling Ditto properly alongside other Pokémon, as well as determining how much Ditto should transform when taking on other abilities. In the final game, these transformations primarily focus on Ditto's arms. Additionally, Ohmori emphasized the importance of retaining random encounter elements in Pokopia, marking an interesting design choice compared to recent entries in the franchise.
Current Expansion and Patch Updates
Alongside the prototype video reveal, Pokémon Pokopia has received its Version 2.0.0 update alongside the launch of the Pokopia Expansion Pass. The first wave of DLC, titled Bubbly Basin, introduces a new map to explore, additional Pokémon to discover, and quality-of-life adjustments. The expansion received an 8/10 review score, praised for its solid start and refreshing underwater-themed content.
