Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated that the gaming industry must focus on “affordability and efficiency” as it prepares for the next generation of hardware. In an interview with the BBC, Sharma noted that the sector has entered a period of increased costs for critical components like memory and storage, describing the current climate as a “Rampocalypse.”

Focus on Project Helix

The comments come as Microsoft prepares for its next-generation console, currently referred to by the codename Project Helix. Sharma indicated that the company is evaluating how to build the best player experience while navigating global economic pressures and the rising cost of hardware components.

Key Factors Influencing Costs:

  • AI Data Centers: Significant industry spending on AI infrastructure is contributing to increased component costs.
  • Component Shortages: A broader crisis in hardware and component supply is forcing companies to rethink their manufacturing strategies.
  • Hardware Efficiency: Future console development must prioritize how storage and memory are utilized to manage the price per unit.

“All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency,” Sharma said. “That is something that we have not had to do previously. But with the crisis that's currently happening in hardware and components, it is absolutely something all of us need to be thinking about.”

While specific details on Project Helix remain limited, Sharma emphasized that Microsoft’s goal is to provide players with more choices regarding how they purchase and interact with their consoles in the coming generation.
