Nearly a year after the launch of Dying Light: The Beast, Techland has officially pulled the plug on the game’s planned release for last-generation consoles. Despite initial promises to bring the title to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the developer confirmed that these versions have been canceled.

In a statement shared on social media, Techland explained that the decision came down to hardware constraints. “Dying Light: The Beast was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware,” the studio stated. “Its open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal all depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide.”

Why the Last-Gen Version Was Canceled

Techland noted that as development progressed, it became increasingly clear that adapting the game for older platforms would require significant compromises. The studio emphasized that it was unwilling to degrade the experience of the original version to force compatibility with the aging architecture of the PS4 and Xbox One.

For those who had been waiting for these versions, Techland has confirmed that players are eligible for a refund. This move is expected to primarily affect those who had already placed pre-orders for the last-gen release.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Debate

The announcement has sparked a mixed response among the Dying Light community. While some fans acknowledge the technical difficulties inherent in scaling a modern title for hardware that is now roughly six years into the current console cycle, others remain frustrated.

Disgruntled players have pointed to Dying Light 2, which remains playable on PS4 and Xbox One, questioning why The Beast cannot follow suit. Many argue that the newer title does not appear to be significantly more demanding than its predecessor. Additionally, some fans have expressed continued dissatisfaction regarding the lack of a physical release for the game, a point of contention that persists alongside the news of the platform cancellation.

Dying Light: The Beast, which carries an M rating for mature audiences, continues to be available for players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, following its initial release on September 19, 2025.
