Techland has officially announced that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The decision comes nearly a year after the game’s initial release on current-generation platforms, marking a final pivot away from the aging hardware.
Technical Realities Behind the Decision
In a statement shared via social media, the developer explained that the cancellation was driven by the technical demands of the project. According to Techland, Dying Light: The Beast was developed from the ground up to utilize the capabilities of modern hardware. The studio noted that the game's expansive open world, advanced visual fidelity, and fluid combat and traversal systems require processing power and memory that the 13-year-old consoles simply cannot provide.
"As development progressed, it became clear that bringing the game to those platforms would require compromises that would prevent us from delivering the experience we set out to create," the studio stated.
Techland emphasized that this was not a choice made to intentionally leave players behind, but rather a reflection of the technical realities required to maintain the quality of the intended experience. The team expressed regret for the disappointment the cancellation causes for those who were looking forward to playing on previous-generation hardware.
A Shift for the Dying Light Series
While Dying Light 2—which originally served as the foundation for The Beast before it was spun off into a standalone title—saw a release on PS4 and Xbox One in 2022, the transition to full current-gen exclusivity highlights the widening gap between console generations. As the industry moves further into the lifecycle of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the move underscores a growing trend of developers prioritizing modern architecture over the constraints of hardware that is now over a decade old.
