Bot Lane Meta Adjustments

Riot Games is preparing to shift the League of Legends bot lane meta in Patch 26.16. Following a period where AP mages have increasingly displaced traditional marksmen in professional play and ranked matches, developers are implementing targeted adjustments to restore the balance between the two classes.

According to Lead Gameplay Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, the current meta is a byproduct of earlier seasonal changes that unintentionally incentivized roaming support strategies. While the team aims to maintain diversity in champion picks, they concluded that the dominance of mages has moved beyond their desired goals for the bot lane.

Confirmed Balance Changes

The upcoming patch focuses on specific levers rather than sweeping class-wide overhauls to preserve the unique identity of both mages and ADCs. The following changes are confirmed for the update:

  • Support Roaming Penalties: Out-of-lane gold and XP penalties are increasing from 25 percent (up to level 3) to 33 percent (up to level 5).
  • Item and Rune Buffs: Berserker’s Greaves and the Fleet Footwork rune are both receiving buffs.
  • Marksman Survivability: ADC base magic resist is being increased, though magic resist growth is being reduced.
  • Summoner Spells: The Heal spell is receiving a direct buff.

These adjustments are designed to benefit marksmen who rely on sustained auto-attacks, such as Jinx, Caitlyn, Zeri, and Kai’Sa. Developers noted that these changes are not final and that additional experimental adjustments are currently being tested ahead of the official release.

Impact on Ranked Play

The development team clarified that win rates for mages like Brand, Swain, and Ziggs can be misleading, as these champions often perform well in casual ranked environments regardless of professional meta-trends. By increasing the cost of early roaming, Riot aims to force a shift back toward traditional 2v2 lane dynamics without completely removing mage picks from the bot lane ecosystem.
