A community-led petition calling for the development of Destiny 3 has reached over 400,000 signatures. The campaign, hosted on Change.org, emerged after Bungie confirmed in late May 2026 that support for Destiny 2 would conclude.
The End of Destiny 2 Support
Bungie’s decision to transition away from Destiny 2 was announced following the release of The Final Shape. In an official statement, the studio noted, “It has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”
The studio stated that its focus is shifting toward Marathon for the immediate future. This change caught many within the community by surprise, leading to significant backlash. Reports later surfaced that even members of the Destiny 2 development team were not given prior notice of the end of support, learning of the decision at the same time as the public.
Petition Milestones and Community Reaction
The petition, started by Harley Casto, argues that the desire for new content and fresh storylines within the series remains high. It saw a rapid increase in support, jumping from 170,000 signatures in late May to more than 400,000 as of late July 2026.
Commenters on the petition platform have cited the game's unique identity and the personal value of the communities built over the last 12 years as primary motivations for their participation. Some segments of the player base have also expressed their frustration through other means, including review-bombing Marathon and discussing potential coordinated efforts to impact Destiny 2 server activity to demonstrate continued player interest.
Current Development Status
Despite the high volume of signatures, there is no evidence that the project is moving forward. Reports from June 2026 confirmed that Destiny 3 is not in active production. Further complicating the situation at the studio, Bungie underwent a round of layoffs in late June that affected hundreds of employees.
While the petition continues to gain momentum, it remains unclear if it will influence the long-term production plans at Sony or Bungie.
