Since the launch of Pokémon Champions on Nintendo Switch, the battle simulator has seen its share of meta shifts, but the latest update has introduced a monster that is already causing nightmares for ranked players. Mega Staraptor has officially joined the roster, and it is proving to be far more dangerous than anyone anticipated.

While the character has been around for two decades, its new Mega Evolution—originally introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A—functions differently in the Champions battle simulator. Because the Legends games do not utilize the series' traditional Ability mechanic, Mega Staraptor previously lacked a passive perk. That changed this morning, and the addition of the Contrary ability has turned the bird into an absolute menace.

The Power of Contrary

Contrary is a game-changing ability that reverses the flow of stat changes. If a move would typically lower a Pokémon’s stats, Contrary turns that debuff into a boost. For Mega Staraptor, this creates a terrifying loop when paired with Close Combat. The move is a high-powered Fighting-type attack that usually leaves the user vulnerable by dropping their defense and special defense. With Contrary active, those drops are ignored in favor of stat increases, meaning the bird gets stronger and more resilient with every strike.

This is further bolstered by the Pokémon's shift to a Fighting/Flying typing in its Mega form, allowing it to leverage extra damage through its primary moveset. It is a level of synergy that has made the bird a primary target for anyone looking to climb the competitive ladder.

Strategic Synergy in Doubles

The danger isn't limited to solo performance. Players are already finding ways to weaponize support monsters to trigger the bird's potential. In recent doubles play, opponents have been pairing Mega Staraptor with Incineroar. While Incineroar is known for using Parting Shot to lower an opponent's stats, savvy players are using that same move on their own Mega Staraptor. The result? The ability triggers, turning the debuff into an attack boost and setting the stage for a sweep.

As the meta continues to adjust to this new threat, players are scrambling for counters. Whether it is lightning-based threats like Mega Raichu X or other specialized builds, the community is clearly treating the arrival of Mega Staraptor as an immediate "on sight" situation for competitive play.
