Technical Breakdown And Visuals

Digital Foundry has published its technical analysis for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on the Nintendo Switch 2, examining how Bethesda and Virtuos' work holds up a little over a year after the title's initial release. According to the breakdown, the game successfully compresses the entire experience onto a Switch 2 cartridge while delivering impressive image quality that even exceeds the Xbox Series S.

Using DLSS technology, the port achieves a 1080p resolution in docked mode and 900p in handheld mode. However, hitting these visual targets required compromises. Foliage density is scaled back significantly, leaving entire trees missing from the overworld, and many distant assets pop in and out depending on player proximity.

Performance And Frame Pacing Issues

While the visual presentation is largely comparable to beefier hardware, the hardware's reduced horsepower exacerbates underlying performance struggles. Oblivion continues to face frame rate hitches and stability challenges across platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and those issues are very much present on Nintendo's new console.

The port targets 30fps but suffers from noticeable frame pacing issues. The camera hitches frequently as frame-times flip between 16ms and 50ms. Unlike the performance degradation over time observed on other systems with unlocked frame rates, the 30fps cap on Switch 2 mitigates that specific regression, while overall stability appears improved despite occasional crashes.
