Chuhai Labs has announced that Wild Blue Skies, a modern on-rails shooter designed to capture the feel of 90s arcade titles, will launch on August 13, 2026. The game will be available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with full support for Xbox Play Anywhere to keep progress synced across platforms.

Development and Design Philosophy

Studio director Giles Goddard and the Chuhai Labs team focused on replicating the specific pacing of classic on-rails shooters by embracing hardware-style constraints. According to the developers, the decision to significantly reduce the game's view distance was a key moment in development, shifting player focus to immediate threats and creating a more rhythmic, natural flow for missions.

To maintain a consistent visual identity, the team utilized an outlined cel-shaded style inspired by Japanese animated films, paired with painterly backgrounds. The cockpit experience is further enhanced by a dithering technique used on the aircraft to ensure it does not obstruct the player's view of the environment.

Gameplay Mechanics and Squad Roles

The game emphasizes a high skill ceiling through its control scheme. While accessible, mechanics like the dodge roll and the ability to pull a 180-degree turn in free flight missions are designed to reward player mastery. The campaign is structured into bite-sized episodes, featuring a squad of characters known as the "Blue Bombers."

Voice Cast

  • Bowie Stray: Jonah Scott
  • Roe Whitetail: Suzie Yeung
  • Chuck Barbacoa: Edward Bosco
  • Thorne: Daman Mills

The game features branching mission paths intended to encourage multiple playthroughs and high-score chasing, staying true to the arcade inspirations cited by the studio.
