What the ROM Hack Changes

Developed by marinyan, the brand-new patch addresses several technical issues plaguing the original Mega Drive cartridge. Yoshimura—the original programmer and designer who also worked on the SNES version of Prince of Persia and created Thunder Force—provided input on the adjustments to ensure game balance remained intact.

The release is split across three separate IPS files on GitHub, allowing players to choose specific enhancements:

  • A patch dedicated purely to bug fixes, resolving game-breaking crashes and progression errors.
  • A patch removing turning restrictions, enabling left and right movement while walking forward and backward.
  • A final patch that introduces diagonal parallel strafing.

Originally created as a pioneering 3D polygonal shooter on the PC-8801 before heading to home computer ports like the Sharp X-1, PC-9801, and Sharp X68000, the Mega Drive edition of Star Cruiser famously streamlined combat by letting players engage enemies without transitioning to a separate battlefield.
