Thatgamecompany has released Dear Van Gogh, a new narrative experience now available within Sky: Children of the Light. This “game-within-a-game” focuses on the life and legacy of artist Vincent van Gogh, offering players a chance to engage with his history through an interactive lens.

Quick Facts

  • Developer: Thatgamecompany
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, PC (Steam), PlayStation, Nintendo Switch
  • Duration: Approximately two hours
  • Access Requirement: Completion of the game's initial tutorial

The experience centers on the relationships between Vincent, his brother Theo, and his sister-in-law Johanna, who was responsible for preserving Vincent’s legacy following his death. Players navigate 3D environments recreated from some of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings. These spaces incorporate a specific in-game brush mechanic, which players use to help restore the beauty of the artwork while uncovering details about the painter's life and the emotional impact of his work.

Sky: Children of the Light, a free-to-play “cozy MMO” that originally launched in 2019, has seen over 300 million downloads to date. The addition of Dear Van Gogh is designed to be accessible to both existing fans and new players. Because the content unlocks immediately after the brief tutorial, there is no need to have progressed through other areas of the game to access the new story.

The announcement from Thatgamecompany follows the studio's history of creating emotionally driven titles, including Journey. Players interested in a preview of the new content can view the official launch trailer on the developer's YouTube channel.
