Roblox shares have fallen 72% over the past year following the company's Q2 2026 earnings report, where leadership revealed that recent monetization efforts have underperformed against forecasts.

Algorithm Changes and Monetization

During a Q&A session with investors, CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen K. Chopra explained that while engagement hours remain in line with internal expectations, the revenue generated per hour has decreased. The company attributes this to a shift in its recommendation algorithm, which now prioritizes long-term retention over the high-monetization viral titles that dominated the platform in 2025.

"We attribute the unforeseen monetization shortfall to a greater-than-expected shift of engagement from high-monetizing, 2025 'vintage' viral games to a combination of new and evergreen experiences with lower hourly monetization," Chopra stated.

Future Platform Strategy

Baszucki indicated that the company is actively moving away from "clickbait-y" or "cash grabby" games, which he suggests are often short-lived. Instead, the platform is focusing on "evergreen" content designed to keep players engaged over longer periods. This strategy is coupled with an explicit push to attract 18-and-up players, a demographic that Baszucki noted represents 80% of the $200 billion global gaming market.

While the company is targeting an older audience, the majority of its 123 million daily active users remain under 17. The current data shows that these younger users are spending less money on the platform compared to previous quarters.

What Remains Unknown

Chopra declined to provide financial projections for the remainder of the 2026 fiscal year, citing the complexity of the current "moving pieces" within the platform's ecosystem. Whether the shift toward evergreen, long-term experiences will eventually recover the lost monetization levels remains unconfirmed by company leadership.
