EA Private Buyout Finalized

Electronic Arts has officially completed its transition to a private company following a $55 billion (£41 billion) buyout. The sale, which concluded on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, stands as the second-largest acquisition in video game history behind Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard King. Per reporting from the BBC, it is also considered the largest leveraged buyout in history, meaning a significant portion of the transaction involved borrowed funds that must be repaid.

Stakeholders and Industry Concerns

The newly private company falls under the control of stakeholders including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Affinity Partners, a firm owned by Jared Kushner. The structure of the deal has sparked industry concern and internal discussions regarding human rights issues tied to the PIF, particularly concerning treatment of women and criminal justice practices under Saudi leadership, as well as the safety of critics such as the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Additional discussions center on franchises like The Sims and BioWare's Dragon Age and Mass Effect series, which feature queer themes and LGBTQ+ communities. Same-sex relationships remain illegal in Saudi Arabia, leaving the future direction of these franchises uncertain. Bloomberg analyst Jason Schreier anticipates the buyout will prompt cost-cutting measures, including potential mass layoffs and increased monetization, as EA operates against the backdrop of underperforming sales for Dragon Age: The Veilguard and modest player peaks for Battlefield 6.
