Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to release on September 4, 2026. The title will launch simultaneously across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Combat Design and Difficulty

Following player feedback regarding the summer demo, which some found to be accessible, Capcom has signaled that the full experience is intended to provide a significant challenge. The combat system emphasizes precise swordplay, requiring players to distinguish between parries, deflections, and clashes to manage enemy break meters and survival.

Key combat mechanics include:

  • Parries: Used to reposition enemies and leave them off balance.
  • Deflections: Used to bounce enemies back and deal break damage, effective against both melee attacks and projectiles.
  • Clashes: Occur when swinging simultaneously with an enemy, opening opportunities for counter-attacks.
  • Gauntlet System: Players can absorb soul energy from defeated Genma to upgrade abilities and restore health.

Gameplay and Progression

The game features a protagonist based on the historical figure Musashi Miyamoto, depicted with the likeness of actor Toshiro Mifune. Set in a corrupted version of Kyoto, the game begins with linear progression before expanding into an open area where players can tackle sidequests and dispel spheres of corruption. Upgrades are available through story progression and shrine-checkpoint menus.

For those who find the default difficulty too demanding, the game includes an easier mode and adjustable gameplay settings, such as visual prompts to assist with combat timing. The title remains a departure from the power fantasy of dispatching weak enemies, requiring players to adapt their pace between aggressive onslaughts and defensive maneuvering to defeat complex bosses like the Genma creature, Rasho-gan.
