The extent to which some will try to feign skill, whether it be cheating in games or in other activities, has always baffled me. Why can't people just be okay with sucking at things? In this case, I'm talking about Meccha Chameleon—you know, the casual fun game you're meant to play with friends.

It turns out that some Meccha Chameleon lobbies have been invaded by people who have so little self-esteem that they'll use a cheating program to scan an image and print it on their character to hide from the seekers. As of July 5, 2026, we have our first documented report of a cheater in the game, thanks to social media user @thatsjustunreal, who posted a video showing just how desperate some players are to win.

Community Retaliation Against Cheaters

Luckily, the cheater in that instance was interrupted by two noble bystanders who forfeited their own run. Instead of playing normally, they followed the cheater around the map, drawing huge red arrows on their body to show the hunters where this scoundrel lay. It’s a hilarious and effective way for the community to deal with those who refuse to play fair.

Unfortunately, not all encounters with this software end with a vigilante intervention. Automaton shared another video of a cheater demonstrating just how easy it is to scan backgrounds and print them onto their character in what is being called the "auto-paint" cheat. In that specific instance, there were no good Samaritans around to point out the foul play.

Why Cheat at a Casual Game?

Cheating isn't a new phenomenon, but it's extra sad to see people resorting to hacks in a game that is meant to celebrate creativity, skill, and in some senses, just giving it your best shot. I've tried disguising myself as many things in Meccha Chameleon, and none of them have looked particularly good, but I haven't given up in my efforts.

As a wise dog once said, sucking at stuff is the first step to being sort of good at something, and I think that's beautiful. It's certainly more rewarding than the hacker equivalent of CTRL + C, CTRL + V. For those of us who prefer to play the old-fashioned way, keep an eye out for players who look a little too much like the wall they are hiding against.
