Ubisoft has released the original version of Heroes of Might & Magic 3 on Steam, but users are currently unable to play it. The download, which costs $10, occupies only 23.49 KB of disk space and fails to launch, displaying a "dummy executable" error message.
This release was intended to provide an alternative to the 2015 HD rerelease, which fans of the series have long criticized for excluding the Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death expansions, as well as the random map generator. By contrast, this new Steam listing includes the base game and both expansions, though the absence of actual game files has resulted in an 80% negative user rating on the platform.
Current Status and Alternatives
As of now, the files required to run the game are missing from the Steam package. Players looking for a functional copy of the strategy classic currently have the following options:
- GOG: The complete edition remains available and is currently listed at half-price.
- Steam: Prospective buyers should wait for a patch from Ubisoft to resolve the missing file issue before purchasing.
