Bungie has confirmed a change in leadership for Marathon following the departure of game director Joe Ziegler. Ziegler, who joined the studio at the end of 2022 after a 12-year tenure at Riot Games, announced his exit in a recent statement.
New Leadership for Marathon
Stepping into the role of game director is Del Chafe III. Previously the assistant game director, Chafe III will lead the project alongside creative director Julia Nardin. In a note regarding the transition, Ziegler expressed confidence in their leadership, stating that both have been operating in strong capacities and are prepared to guide the title forward.
Quick Facts
- New Game Director: Del Chafe III
- Creative Director: Julia Nardin
- Previous Director: Joe Ziegler (departed 2026)
- Platforms: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Ziegler’s exit follows a period of instability at the Sony-owned studio. Bungie implemented a round of layoffs in late June 2026 that impacted teams across both Destiny and Marathon. The project has also seen prior leadership turnover, as former game director Christopher Barrett was previously dismissed due to misconduct allegations; Barrett recently reached a settlement with Bungie and Sony earlier this month.
Regarding his future, Ziegler noted he is moving to a new position, which he intends to announce soon. He thanked the community for their support of the team’s work on the space survival title, adding that the mission to develop Marathon will continue under its new leadership.
