Bungie is set to shake up the Marathon experience next week as the studio looks to keep momentum going with a new mid-season update. Starting July 21, version 1.1.5 will introduce an experimental PvE mode called Vault Breaker, offering players a roguelite take on the extraction shooter.
How Vault Breaker Works
In this new mode, players take on the role of Runners infiltrating the Cryo Archive. The experience is designed as a roguelite, tasking players with clearing progressively tougher vaults across multiple runs. According to Bungie, this mode is meant to provide a tactical alternative to the standard competitive loops, allowing players to maneuver with more focus while rival crews are preoccupied elsewhere on Tau Ceti IV.
You can tackle these vaults solo, in a duo, or as a full trio. The core loop involves using hit-and-run tactics to secure valuable loot and deeper access to the deck, all while putting pressure on the UESC’s jurisdiction.
Upgrading Your Sponsored Kit
Progress in Vault Breaker provides tangible benefits for your overall journey in Marathon. Players collect Vault Data during their runs, which can be spent on two primary goals:
- Upgrading your current Sponsored Kit.
- Purchasing weapons, items, and gear from the new Vault Breaker Armory.
Items acquired through the Armory are not locked to the PvE mode; you can bring them back to your other adventures across Tau Ceti.
