Bungie has confirmed that the mid-season 2 update for Marathon will launch next week, bringing the shooter's first dedicated PvE content to the game. The new mode, dubbed Vault Breaker, is an experimental roguelite experience that will run for a limited time, starting July 21 and ending on August 4, 2026.

Quick Facts

  • Mode Name: Vault Breaker
  • Availability: July 21, 2026 – August 4, 2026
  • Player Count: Supports solo, duo, and trio runs
  • Location: Cryo Archive

In Vault Breaker, players infiltrate the Cryo Archive to tackle increasingly difficult vaults. As they progress through these runs, they will collect a new currency known as Vault Data. This currency can be spent in the new Vault Breaker armory to upgrade unique sponsored kits, or used to purchase gear and items outside of the mode entirely.

Additional Update Features

Beyond the limited-time PvE content, the mid-season 2 update includes several quality-of-life adjustments:

  • Improved Iconography: Implants are receiving a visual refresh to ensure they are more legible for players during looting.
  • Evolution System: The Cradle is introducing a new system that allows players to prestige their stats and unlock new runner-style shells.
  • Ability Adjustments: The assassin shell gains a toggleable invisibility ability, and the thief’s drone will now highlight enemy players.
  • Convenience Toggles: A new feature allows for the automatic equipment of sponsored kits.

The short two-week window for Vault Breaker suggests that Bungie is treating this release as a test rather than a permanent fixture in the game. While the new features and systemic updates arrive alongside the mode, players looking to experience the roguelite gameplay will need to jump in before the August 4 cutoff.
