Bungie has pulled back the curtain on Marathon's upcoming experimental PvE mode, Vault Breaker. The mode is set to arrive alongside the game's mid-season update on July 21, with an initial availability window running through August 4. Following this two-week test, the full rollout for the mode is currently slated for Season 3, which begins on September 22.

Quick Facts

  • Mode Type: Roguelite PvE inside the Cryo Archive.
  • Initial Run: July 21, 2026, to August 4, 2026.
  • Currency: Vault Data (Tier One and Tier Two).
  • Equipment: Players start with Sponsored Kits; loot gathered during runs is left behind.

How Vault Breaker Works

Vault Breaker introduces a distinct departure from the core extraction shooter loop of Marathon. Players enter the mode using unique Sponsored Kits. Unlike standard modes, any loot gathered during a run is left behind; instead, players earn a new currency called Vault Data to upgrade their equipment.

Bungie confirmed that kits start at their weakest point, featuring only one standard weapon and limited consumables. As players accumulate Vault Data, they can unlock various upgrade paths, allowing them to focus on weapon quality, survivability, or a broader selection of implants and cores. It is important to note that equipment purchased with Vault Data is intended for use in standard Marathon modes and cannot be taken into Vault Breaker itself.

Earning Vault Data

The developer has outlined two tiers of Vault Data, each with different acquisition requirements. Tier One data is found within vaults and requires a successful extraction to keep. Alternatively, players can earn Tier One data by killing a UESC Commander, which rewards the currency regardless of whether the player successfully extracts.

Tier Two Vault Data is more restrictive, earned only by solving consecutive vaults during a single run and completing a successful extraction. Bungie noted that this challenge is designed to be particularly difficult for solo Runners, though the mode remains playable in duos or trios.

Weekly Rotations and Progression

To keep the experience fresh, Bungie will offer two tiers of Vault Data items on a weekly rotation. This will be supplemented by a "daily deluxe weapon" and various Prestige weapons. While the initial two-week test provides a limited window for players to engage with the PvE experience, the developer's strategy appears focused on gauging player feedback before the Season 3 release.
