Halo Studios is officially entering its next era with the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, arriving on PC this month. The project represents a comprehensive effort to rebuild the 2001 classic from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, aiming to capture the atmosphere of the original while leveraging modern technical capabilities.
The Transition to Unreal Engine 5
According to Halo Studios Art Director Chris Matthews and Halo: Campaign Evolved Art Director Donnie Taylor, the move to Unreal Engine 5 was driven by a need to reduce technical barriers. While the Slipspace engine used for Halo Infinite was powerful, it required significant specialized knowledge to execute complex designs. Unreal allowed the team to iterate more freely, with tools like Nanite, Niagara, Lumen, and Mega Lights enabling a level of visual fidelity that was previously unreachable.
The studio utilized "Project Foundry" as a proof-of-concept to test these workflows. This test bed helped the team refine environments, materials, and atmospheric lighting—work that directly informed the development of iconic levels like “Halo” and “Assault on the Control Room.”
Balancing Legacy and Modernization
The art team established five core pillars for the project: Military/Science Fiction, Aspirational/Spectacle, Grounded/Relatable, Intriguing/Storied, and Thoughtful/Intentional. Rather than a beat-for-beat recreation, the team focused on preserving the essence of the 2001 experience. This meant reviewing the original Bungie-era concept art and lore to ensure that visual updates felt authentic to the franchise.
“Our goal was to refocus on what we felt when we played Halo: Combat Evolved for the first time,” Taylor explained. “It translated into darker, moodier environments where the feeling and tone of the game were truer to the original.”
This philosophy extended to character and vehicle design. The team utilized an "Evergreen Assets" exercise to determine the definitive look of series staples. For example, while the Warthog and Mjolnir armor were rebuilt, the team restored specific details that had been simplified over time, such as the Warthog's wheel-supporting swing arms. Cortana’s appearance was similarly balanced to respect her original purple hue while acknowledging the modern electric blue holographic look fans have come to associate with the character.
New Territory: Operation: Meteorite
Beyond the original ten missions, Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces three new bonus missions under the banner of "Operation: Meteorite." These missions provided the team with an opportunity to create original content within the Halo universe, introducing a new Covenant faction known as the Sacristan.
“The bonus missions were different because they gave the team room to create new Halo content rather than faithfully reinterpreting an existing mission,” Matthews noted. The environments in these missions are designed to be more opulent and ornate, reflecting a personal ship operated by a zealous, multi-species faction, while maintaining the established design language of the series.
Halo: Campaign Evolved launches on PC on July 28. Players seeking early access can pre-order the Premium Edition to begin playing on July 23.
