Joe Ziegler, the game director for Marathon, is leaving Bungie. Ziegler confirmed that July 17, 2026, marks his final day at the studio. Following his departure, the project will be led by assistant game director Del Chafe III, a 15-year veteran of the studio, alongside creative director Julia Nardin.
Leadership Changes Amid Studio Restructuring
The transition in Marathon's leadership follows significant staff reductions at Bungie. Last month, approximately 300 employees were laid off, representing nearly 40 percent of the studio's workforce. These cuts included the departure of Marathon general manager Scott Taylor, who has been replaced by Joshua Deane, the studio's head of product. Additionally, senior design lead Lars Bakken—a 20-year Bungie veteran with credits including Halo 3—has also left the studio.
Current Status of Marathon
Despite the high-profile exits and the ongoing restructuring of the development team, Sony has stated that it remains committed to the project. Marathon, an extraction shooter released on March 5, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X, is currently facing declining player counts.
The development team is now focused on upcoming content updates, including a full-blown PvE mode scheduled for release this fall. In the interim, the team is working on a roguelite version of the Cryo Archive environment to sustain engagement.
Player Impact
For players, the immediate future of the game remains tied to these upcoming content drops. While Ziegler did not disclose his next role, he noted in a post on X that he is moving to another project at a different studio. He expressed pride in the team's work, acknowledging the community's role in the game's "windy mission" to establish its space survival setting.
