A developer has successfully ported Half-Life to original PlayStation 1 hardware, running the game natively without relying on traditional emulation. Created by Manny of Bonnie Studios, the project features a custom renderer and game runtime written entirely in the Rust coding language.
Demonstrated via a 14-minute video capture from a real SCPH-9002 model PlayStation 1, the port runs the complete Hazard Course tutorial across all seven maps from start to finish in a single sitting. According to the developer, the build averages around 17 frames per second, holding near 20 FPS most of the time and dropping to 10–16 FPS in wider areas.
Technical Workarounds for 1998 Hardware
Getting Valve's 1998 first-person shooter running on a Sony console released in North America in 1995 required substantial technical optimizations. Manny outlined several specific workarounds used to fit the game onto the 33MHz console CPU, including:
- BSP traversal doubling as painter's order for the ordering table
- PVS culling and 16-colour CLUTs at 4 bits per pixel
- LZ4 map chunks streamed into a static buffer
- Animation frames pre-posed at cook time due to the lack of an FPU and heap
- SPU ADPCM audio alongside 27 Red Book CD tracks on the disc
Valve Greenlight Status and Requirements
Because the project is a fan effort, Manny has contacted Valve to ask for permission before publishing the source code. For legal reasons, a downloadable disc image or ready-to-play build will not be provided unless Valve grants approval or does not object within roughly a month.
Once released, players will need a real PlayStation 1 console alongside a lawfully obtained Steam copy of Half-Life, as the converter reads the game on a local machine to build the disc image. Manny's next planned hardware project aims to run Minecraft-style worlds natively on the original PlayStation 1 hardware, featuring full chunk streaming, day-night cycles, mobs, and caves.
