In its 22 years on PC, World of Warcraft has accumulated an elaborate ecosystem of metrics and simulation tools designed to analyze combat performance. But during the MMO's early days, former designer Wyatt Cheng revealed that Blizzard had no robust data on how much damage players could realistically put out.
Speaking in a YouTube short outlining the design history of the Naxxramas raid boss Patchwerk, Cheng explained that designing encounters without comprehensive player combat data required manual testing.
How Blizzard Balanced Patchwerk in 2006
Released in June 2006, Patchwerk was inspired by the Avatar of War raid boss from EverQuest, an encounter requested by then-Director Jeff Kaplan that focused purely on fundamentals rather than complex mechanics. Patchwerk was built to test tanks, healers, and DPS through sheer tuning, with attacks alternating between main tanks and off-tanks.
That design created an immediate exploit: raid groups could trivialize the fight simply by stacking extra healers and slowly whittling down the boss's health pool. To fix this, Blizzard introduced the Enrage timer as an explicit DPS check, forcing players to defeat Patchwerk before a set time elapsed or face lethal damage.
Because tools like World of Logs did not exist yet, Blizzard had to figure out DPS thresholds manually. Top players inside the company tested every single class against target dummies to maximize potential damage output. Anticipating that serious raiders would find ways to push the game further, developers then padded Patchwerk's health pool by an extra 30% for safety.
