Infinity Ward is looking to breathe new life into the franchise's single-player experience with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is officially slated for release on October 23, 2026. During a press briefing held on July 15, studio head Mark Grigsby revealed that the upcoming campaign draws significant inspiration from the global popularity of South Korean cultural exports, including music groups like BTS and Blackpink, as well as the television series Squid Game.
Quick Facts
- Release Date: October 23, 2026

A New Direction for the Campaign
Development on Modern Warfare 4 has been underway for approximately three years, with principal production beginning in late 2023. Grigsby noted that the team intentionally chose the Korean peninsula as the primary setting to capitalize on the current global interest in Korean culture. The team also leveraged the region's existing geopolitical tensions to create a narrative that feels timely and relevant, while avoiding a direct depiction of a real-life conflict.
“When we talk to people from South Korea—employees that we have, or even our military advisors and things like that—they go, ‘It’s really not going to happen,’” Grigsby explained. “But there’s definitely some tension there, right? So we were like, ‘there is a story there.’”
Three-Pronged Narrative
The story structure of Modern Warfare 4 is divided into three distinct threads. Players will follow a group of young U.S. soldiers and South Korean marines drafted into service, navigate the internal political struggles within a fictionalized North Korean government, and continue the story of Captain John Price. Notably, the game moves away from the primary antagonist of the previous series; Grigsby confirmed that Price kills Vladimir Makarov in the game's second level.
“He beats him to death,” said Grigsby. “So, this game isn’t about Makarov. This is a totally new game.”
Focusing on Single-Player
With recent entries like Black Ops 7 facing criticism for prioritizing multiplayer, Infinity Ward is positioning the campaign as a centerpiece of this release. The campaign will also serve as the setting for the game’s DMZ extraction mode. Regarding the possibility of co-op play, Grigsby clarified that the studio remains committed to the single-player format for the time being.
“We’ve always felt that campaign is a single-player experience,” Grigsby said. “I don’t think we have any plans in the future—us, personally—to do anything co-op, although if there’s a way to do it without being online, that could be cool.”
