The impact of Microsoft’s recent decision to cut 3,200 employees across its Xbox division is being felt deeply within Bethesda Game Studios. Following the elimination of 1,600 jobs earlier this week, union representatives report that dozens of programmers, artists, designers, and testers have been let go from the studio. As the industry grapples with these significant job cuts, internal concern is mounting regarding the future of The Elder Scrolls 6.
The Human Cost of Restructuring
Current Bethesda staff have spoken to IGN about the internal fallout, describing the mood at the studio as "crushing." The layoffs have touched every discipline, including the departure of long-term employees. Among those affected is 27-year veteran artist Christiane Meister, whose tenure at the studio included work on Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4.
"We've all been very excited and hyped for TES 6, and this has had a crushing effect on morale," one developer shared. Another employee noted, "The loss will have a substantial and cascading effect on the game and morale of this studio."
Concerns Over Development and Proprietary Tools
Beyond the immediate loss of talent, there is significant anxiety regarding how the studio will maintain momentum on its upcoming RPG. The development team is worried that the reliance on proprietary tools creates a specific hurdle for future hiring. Because external hires will require extensive onboarding to understand these specialized systems, staff fear that the studio will be forced to rely on cheaper, contracted labor or face a cycle of crunch to compensate for the lost time.
"There is a fear that we are going to be replaced by cheaper, contracted labor, or we will hire folks to replace them that will need to be onboarded... resulting in more delays, and we'll need to crunch to make up the time," one developer admitted.
A Long-Awaited Title
The uncertainty surrounding The Elder Scrolls 6 comes after nearly 15 years of anticipation. The studio has provided very little information, with the last official trailer arriving eight years ago at E3 in 2018. Todd Howard has previously suggested that fans should "just pretend we didn't announce it" and has explicitly stated that the game remains "a while" off. With the loss of institutional knowledge due to these layoffs, the path toward the game's eventual release appears more complicated than ever.
