Game Freak has officially confirmed that the battle mechanics in future mainline Pokémon titles will undergo gradual changes. In a recent video posted to the official Game Freak YouTube channel, series veteran Shigeki Morimoto and Pokémon Champions co-director Kazumasa Iwao clarified the studio’s strategy for the franchise's evolving combat.
According to Iwao, the decision to launch Pokémon Champions, which released on April 8, 2026, was driven by a desire to balance innovation with consistency. The developers intend to implement new battle challenges in mainline entries while keeping the classic, established system alive and playable for a long time through Champions.
Quick Facts
- Game: Pokémon Champions
- Release Date: April 8, 2026
- Platform: Nintendo Switch
- Developer: The Pokémon Works and Game Freak
The developers noted that maintaining a single, unchanging battle system for every entry has become a "sticking point" for the team, as they look to explore new gameplay experiences similar to those seen in Legends: Arceus. By positioning Pokémon Champions as the new standard for competitive play, the team aims to ensure that long-term fans are not required to relearn the foundational battle system with every new mainline release.
