Former Nintendo UK PR and social media manager Ashley Day has shared details regarding the unconventional launch strategy behind Animal Crossing: New Leaf, revealing that former Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata mandated that every employee at Nintendo Europe play the game months before its release.

- Key Mandate: Free copies were distributed to all Nintendo Europe and subsidiary staff months prior to shelf date
Speaking on the Back Page podcast, Day explained that the unusual internal push originated directly from Iwata. The late CEO wanted all staff members to experience the rhythm of the game firsthand and understand what it was like to play Animal Crossing habitually. Iwata reportedly told employees that playing the title was officially part of their job.
The internal mandate yielded notable results within Nintendo's European operations. According to Day, demographic groups within the company who typically did not play games—including sales personnel in their late 50s—became deeply invested in the title, participating in the in-game stock market and designing custom clothing.
While the strategy was unique for the company, Animal Crossing: New Leaf ultimately went on to become a major release and a benchmark for the franchise on the Nintendo 3DS.
