Following a major restructure that eliminated 3,200 jobs at Xbox, Psychonauts and Brutal Legend developer Double Fine has secured its independence and announced the return of a classic studio tradition. The studio is heading back to crowdfunding for Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot: A Double Fine Productions Game Jam, Documentary and Kickstarter Campaign, which hits Kickstarter on August 31.

Quick Facts

  • Event: Amnesia Fortnight 2026 game jam and Kickstarter campaign
  • Launch Date: August 31
  • Process: Backers choose four ideas to become prototypes, and one final prototype will be turned into a small game
  • Documentation: 2 Player Productions will film a documentary series on the project
  • Studio Status: Double Fine is once again independent and has regained its IP publishing rights

How Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Works

The upcoming project revives a longstanding Double Fine tradition born during the development of Brutal Legend, where the studio temporarily paused its main projects to split into groups and build small game prototypes over two weeks. Past Amnesia Fortnight prototypes eventually grew into retail releases such as Costume Quest, Stacking, and Kiln.

For this iteration, the game jam will be broadcast live on the internet. Backers will vote on a myriad of studio ideas to determine which four concepts become prototypes, and ultimately which of those four transforms into a full small game. Additionally, 2 Player Productions will document the entire two-week process, following up on their previous multi-hour documentary work on Psychonauts 2.

Independence and IP Rights

The studio's return to crowdfunding comes alongside a major structural shift. Double Fine recently experienced 23 layoffs following its split from Xbox, but CEO Tim Schafer confirmed on the Kinda Funny podcast that the studio has successfully regained its publishing rights and complete ownership of its back catalog of intellectual property.

Double Fine is no stranger to crowdfunding, having famously funded its throwback adventure game Broken Age through Kickstarter back in 2012 before its release in two parts across 2014 and 2015.
