Microsoft is reportedly developing plans to expand the Xbox 360 library across its next-generation ecosystem, including the upcoming Project Helix hardware, PCs, and handheld devices. A leaked document suggests that developers of original Xbox 360 titles will be given the option to make their games backward compatible, with control over pricing and availability.

Timeline and Compatibility

The rollout for this backward compatibility feature across next-generation devices is currently slated for 2027 through 2028. Additionally, the full launch of original Xbox titles for PC is expected in October 2026. Currently, four original Xbox games are available to play on PC.

Disc-to-Digital Program Details

The documents also clarify the status of the long-discussed disc-to-digital program. Although a test for Xbox Insiders was initially scheduled for July, the program has been delayed. Once implemented, the system will allow owners of Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs to gain a digital license for their games.

This license will be bound to both the disc and the player's account. Crucially, the system is designed to accommodate physical media ownership: if a player sells or trades the physical disc, the digital license will transfer to the new owner, maintaining the ability for players to trade and sell their games.
