IllFonic has confirmed that Halloween: The Game will receive a digital release in New Zealand after all, despite early reports suggesting a wider ban across the region. Players in New Zealand will be able to purchase the title digitally on September 8, 2026, when it launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Understanding the Classification Conflict
The confusion stemmed from an earlier decision by the Australian Classification Board, which refused to rate the game based on the inclusion of a controlled substance—reportedly a cannabis mechanic tied to the game's civilian gameplay. Initial reports suggested that this refusal extended to both Australia and New Zealand.
IllFonic has since clarified that the restriction is limited by the type of release:
- Physical Releases: The Australian Classification Board's ruling takes precedence for physical goods in both Australia and New Zealand. As a result, the physical version of the game is blocked in both countries.
- Digital Releases: New Zealand utilizes the IARC rating system for digital storefronts, which is independent of the Australian process. Because the game was never formally submitted for classification in New Zealand, the Australian refusal does not prevent a digital launch in that territory.
What to Expect at Launch
While the physical edition is blocked in New Zealand and Australia, the digital version will arrive on schedule alongside the global release. IllFonic has stated the game recreates the atmosphere of the 1978 original, featuring authentic Haddonfield map locations and a score inspired by John Carpenter’s music. In addition to the asymmetrical multiplayer mode, the game will include an offline single-player story mode featuring bots.
Outside of New Zealand, the physical edition is slated for release on October 6, 2026. Australia remains fully blocked for both digital and physical versions unless the developer chooses to resubmit or amend the game's content.
