The Final Fantasy 14 community is no stranger to controversy, particularly concerning in-game stalking. While players have long debated the efficacy of the built-in blacklist system and the impact of various third-party mods, a new plug-in known as “Memoria” recently pushed those concerns to a breaking point.
Memoria gained notoriety for its invasive functionality. According to its GitHub page, the tool was designed to “track every player you encounter automatically and build a history over time.” By pulling data that the game exposes to nearby players and cross-referencing it with public Lodestone information, the mod could record a player's world history, character model changes, and even their progression. For many, this effectively made it impossible to avoid unwanted attention or harassment.
Community Backlash and Privacy Concerns
The reception within the community was immediate and overwhelmingly negative. Players took to platforms like Reddit and Twitter to voice their alarm, with many calling for the mod’s removal and urging Square Enix to intervene. Critics pointed out that the existence of such tools highlights a lack of action against third-party software that facilitates botting, cheating, and harassment.
One particularly concerning aspect of the mod was the creator’s approach to data removal. Users wishing to have their information scrubbed from the service were reportedly required to contact the developer directly via Discord, a process that many found to be unresponsive and inadequate given the potential for harm.
The Service Closes
After being active since April 2026, Memoria has officially shut down. In a farewell message, the creator framed the project as an attempt to help players remember the individuals they crossed paths with in Eorzea, such as “every sprout you helped” or “every static that drifted apart.”
The takedown notice includes a promise that all collected data has been permanently deleted. Despite this, the legacy of the plug-in continues to spark debate. The incident has reignited long-standing frustrations regarding the game’s existing safety tools and the ongoing issue of problematic mods. With the arrival of the Evercold expansion on the horizon, players are once again calling for the developers to prioritize more robust, built-in solutions to protect the community from harassment and stalking.
