Setting the Scene in Sengoku-era Japan
In Expeditions: Samurai, players take on the role of a captain who arrives in Japan aboard a Dutch ship. Unlike the historical figure William Adams, who famously became the first European to earn the title of “Samurai” in 1600, your character arrives in a version of history where Adams never leaves England. As the newly elected leader of a crew of privateers, you are thrust directly into the climax of a civil war.
The game centers on a branching narrative where your decisions influence the fate of your crew, your character, and the broader political landscape of feudal Japan. You will need to navigate relationships with eight distinct companions, each with their own personal stories. Depending on your choices, these characters can become close friends, rivals, or romantic interests.
Combat and Cooperative Gameplay
The title introduces a fast-paced, turn-based combat system that emphasizes simultaneous movement and attacks. Players can use stealth, gadgets, and various weapons—ranging from pirate-themed gear to iconic Japanese blades—to overcome enemies. The game encourages tactical positioning, allowing players to split their team in real-time to set up ambushes.
For the first time in the Expeditions series, the game supports drop-in/drop-out cooperative play. Players can experience the narrative together, with each person controlling one of a pair of twins. This mode adds a social layer to the game's decision-making process; players can compete for a companion’s affection, argue over key narrative choices, or coordinate complex combat maneuvers like synchronized stealth takedowns and firecracker distractions.
