Digital Extremes is bringing a new, permanent "legally distinct" tabletop roleplaying experience to Warframe this August. Titled Fables & Frontiers, the minigame centers on the fantasy tabletop hobby of Amir, one of the protoframes introduced in the 1999 expansion.

  • Access Method: Text-based gameplay via the K.I.M. messaging system
  • Location: A redecorated campaign room within the Höllvania Mall

A Community Love Letter

According to creative director Rebecca Ford, the inclusion of Fables & Frontiers serves as a permanent expansion for the Hex cast, moving beyond the narrative confines of the 1999 update. The project grew from the development team’s own history with tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, eventually evolving from a simple lore reference into a fully playable feature.

"What we found was as we move away from 1999, year over year, it's just too important to leave," Ford told Polygon. Community director Megan Everett added that the feature is intended as a "community love letter" to players who have long expressed interest in seeing the characters engage in the game Amir has been waiting to play.

Amir’s Shockwave and New Content

The launch of Fables & Frontiers will coincide with "Amir’s Shockwave," a themed takeover of the game’s free Nightwave battle pass system. During this event, players will have access to daily and weekly quests. Rewards for the event include the new On-Lyne song, "Running Late," alongside new cosmetics. Players will also be able to summon Amir within the game to participate in the tabletop experience.

The focus on tabletop themes continues beyond this minigame; voice actor and acclaimed Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer is also joining the Warframe cast in the upcoming Tau expansion, where he will portray a detective-themed Warframe named Brysko.
