CD Projekt Red officially pulled back the curtain on the next arc of its hit Netflix series at Anime Expo 2026. If the first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a high-octane, Michael Bay-style roller coaster, the studio is making it clear that season 2 is taking a drastically different approach. According to the developers, they are aiming for a tone more akin to the work of Martin Scorsese—grounded, cinematic, and focused on the harsh realities of Night City life.

A New Perspective on Night City

The premiere episode wastes no time establishing this shift. It follows a character named “King”—real name Weak—whose life falls apart after a heist goes wrong. Unlike the rise-to-fame narrative seen in David Martinez’s story, this new arc focuses on the crushing indifference of Night City. After his crew and implants are stripped away, Weak is left to navigate a world that, as CD Projekt Red notes, struggles to even view those who have lost everything as human.

Cinema itself plays a central role in the show’s new identity. One of the main characters, Roman, is a cameraman documenting the neighborhood, and the show uses the medium of film to force viewers to confront the reality of the characters' memories and experiences. The premiere even leans into this aesthetic, ending with a clever nod to the analog era: the Cyberpunk logo bounces around the frame like a classic DVD screensaver before the credits roll.

Visuals and Narrative Direction

Studio Trigger is once again at the helm, and lead Kai Ikarashi emphasized that the animation team worked to capture the distinct flair of 90s animation for this season. While the show maintains its high-quality production, it establishes a visual identity separate from the first season.

The narrative structure has also evolved. Rather than building one long, linear story, the team at CD Projekt Red is treating Edgerunners as an anthology of sorts, bringing individual Cyberpunk tabletop campaigns to life on the screen. This allows the show to explore different corners of the city, focusing on themes of memory and the preservation of the past as Weak struggles to reconcile his identity following the loss of his cyberware and his memories of the failed heist.

With only a 20-minute glimpse into the lives of Weak, Roman, D, and Talia, the stage is set for a much more intimate, character-driven journey. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is set to hit Netflix in fall 2026.
